Liverpool & Man United amongst teams ‘impressed’ by Matthew Hoppe

Liverpool & Man United amongst teams ‘impressed’ by Matthew Hoppe

Who is Matthew Hoppe?

Matthew Hoppe joined Schalke’s youth ranks in 2019, after departing his home country of the United States.

And the 19-year-old quickly established himself as a key figure in Schalke’s youth setup.

In turn, this season, despite his tender years, Hoppe has emerged as a central cog in the Bundesliga outfit’s first-team.

Schalke are enduring a nightmare 2020/21, and actually look well on course to be relegated come the end of the season.

After 21 league outings, Die Königsblauen have managed to accumulate just nine points, notching a solitary win along the way.

They are also in possession of the worst defensive record in the Bundesliga by some distance, having conceded 52 goals in 21 ties.

One of their few bright sparks to this point in the campaign, though, has been Hoppe.

Prior to this season, the young striker had not made a single appearance for Schalke’s first-team.

However, since being thrown in at the deep end somewhat, the American has bagged five goals in just 11 Bundesliga appearances, including a hat-trick in Schalke’s aforementioned solitary victory.

Matthew Hoppe linked with Premier League clubs

As such, amid a solid debut campaign in Germany’s top-flight, Hoppe now appears to be attracting interest from some top clubs.

According to a recent report from 90min, all of Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham have been hugely impressed by the young centre-forward.

Scouts from the Premier League giants have been monitoring Hoppe’s development throughout the season, with teams from Italy and Spain also said to be keeping tabs on the situation.

No potential transfer fee is mentioned in the report, though it is speculated that Schalke may need to sell Hoppe in the summer to help with the club’s financial issues, or if they are relegated.

The goalscorer’s current contract runs until the summer of 2023.
