Liverpool in line for potential funds boost amid ‘significant’ interest in Marko Grujic

Marko Grujic

The latest word stemming from the English media on Tuesday suggests that interest in the signature of Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is mounting.

Portugal stint

24-year-old Grujic was the first signing of the Jurgen Klopp era at Liverpool, when he made the move to Merseyside from boyhood club Red Star Belgrade in the summer of 2016.

However, his tender years, coupled with the competition for places at Anfield, have since seen Grujic go on to notch just 8 Premier League appearances for the Reds.

The all-action midfielder has been farmed out on a quartet of loans, the latest of which saw Grujic link up with Portuguese giants Porto last summer.

After impressing in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin last season, the move was viewed as a step in the right direction for the Serb, with Porto of course regulars in the Champions League.

To this point, however, Grujic’s stint with Sergio Conceição’s men has proven altogether hit and miss.

The ex-Red Star talent has managed 30 appearances across all competitions, but only 11 have come in the form of starts, including just 4 in the Liga NOS.

Bundesliga return?

In turn, it didn’t come as too much of a surprise when, late last month, reports stemming from Portugal suggested that Porto have already come to the definitive decision not to pursue a permanent deal for Grujic.

But, as outlined above, if ensuing updates doing the rounds in England this week are to be believed, then Liverpool nevertheless look set to field plenty of interest in their midfield loanee come the summer.

As per the Liverpool Echo, a number of clubs from both Serie A and the Bundesliga have made clear their readiness to launch an assault for Grujic.

This comes with the Serb, despite his lack of game-time domestically, having impressed on the European stage, versus the likes of Juventus and Chelsea.

Liverpool, for their part, are yet to decide whether or not Grujic will finally be sold on a permanent basis ahead of next season, with the prospect of an Anfield return not yet completely ruled out.

A departure, though, could raise significant funds towards reinforcements elsewhere, with the Reds’ board said to have quoted interested clubs a fee of at least £20 million just last summer.
