Leicester reportedly interested in Sporting defender Nuno Mendes

Reports from England over the last 24 hours have credited Leicester City with an interest in Nuno Mendes.

Who is Nuno Mendes?

Nuno Mendes is a product of Sporting CP’s youth system, and has spent his entire career to this point with the club.

Despite being just 18, Mendes has already begun to cement himself as a regular contributor in the Portuguese outfit’s senior side.

Mendes was handed his senior debut back in June, coming off the bench for 18 minutes vs Pacos de Ferreira.

The youngster subsequently went on to notch a further eight league appearances last season, with his impressive form having seen Mendes continue to feature on a regular basis in 2020/21.

The left-back, who can also line out at centre-half or as a left-wing-back, has started nine fixtures for the Verde e Brancos this campaign – including two Europa League qualifiers.

And, after bursting onto the scene in Portugal, Mendes now appears to be attracting interest from elsewhere in Europe.

As per a recent report from the Daily Mail, Leicester are monitoring Mendes’ situation, with the teen widely regarded as one of the best up and coming left-backs in Europe.

The Portugal under-21 international is also believed to have already attracted scouts from elite clubs across the continent, as well as interest from a number of Premier League sides.

Newcastle, for example, are said to have made enquiries about Mendes during the summer.

When it comes to a potential fee for Mendes, the Mail claim that the 18-year-old, who is contracted to Sporting until 2025, has a release clause of around £40m.

However, it is added that Sporting have been feeling the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic, and are ‘vulnerable’ to reasonable offers.
