Will Southampton lose Charlie Austin?
It’s not been a good season for Southampton.
Fans were calling for Mauricio Pellegrino’s head long before the Saints finally got rid of the failing manager.
Mark Hughes has since been appointed at St Mary’s. Will Sparky end up managing two relegated Premier League sides in the 2017/18 season?
Last weekend Southampton were played off the park at West Ham.
The Hammers beat the Saints 3-0, leaving Hughes’s men third bottom of the league.
On Wednesday the Mirror believe that Charlie Austin could be off if Southampton do go down.
Leicester vs Aston Villa
Two Midlands rivals are pitched off against each other in the race to sign Charlie Austin: Leicester and Aston Villa.
The Saints have only scored 29 goals in 31 league games this season; that’s one of the main reasons Southampton are starring relegation in the face.
Austin, who has six Premier League goals this season, had been sidelined for three months after he suffered a hamstring injury at Huddersfield. He returned last weekend at West Ham.
The Mirror have now reported:
Charlie Austin will be a man in demand if his struggling Southampton side fail to beat the drop.
Bournemouth, Leicester and Championship promotion-chasers Aston Villa are among the clubs keeping tabs on the situation.
Sadly the Mirror fail to detail how much Southampton could demand for Austin.
For the record, Austin is under contract at St Mary’s until 2020.
Do Leicester need Austin?
Leicester have seemed keen on trying to find a strike partner for Jamie Vardy in recent seasons.
Kelechi Iheanacho was signed from Man City last summer, for example. However the Nigerian international has yet to lock down a starting spot.
Saying that, Leicester may change the way the play next season if Riyad Mahrez leaves the King Power in the summer.
Could Vardy and Austin prove to be a lethal strike-force?
Are Aston Villa going up?
As for Villa, before thinking about Austin, they are sure to want to seal promotion to the Premier League.
Aston Villa are fourth in the table, seven points behind Cardiff in second.
On Tuesday night in the Championship, Villa beat Reading 3-0.
