Leeds transfer latest: Chelsea stopper joins Dan James on January wishlist

A pair of updates surrounding the January transfer plans of Premier League outfit Leeds United have been forthcoming on Tuesday.

James eyed

First, the Whites have been tipped for a fresh swoop for Manchester United winger Daniel James.

Welsh international James of course only made the move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2019, after impressing in the Championship with Swansea City.

Just months prior to his arrival in Manchester, though, the 22-year-old was actually all set to join Leeds.

A deadline day switch to Elland Road had appeared imminent, only for a last-minute change of heart from Swansea resulting in the transfer’s collapse.

If the latest word stemming from the media over the last 24 hours is to be believed, though, then Marcelo Bielsa’s hopes of luring James to West Yorkshire appear to have been revived, almost two years later.

As per a report from the Telegraph, which also details Southampton’s interest in Brandon Williams, Leeds are considering ‘testing Manchester United’s resolve’ over James next month.

A loan move away from Old Trafford, on the face of it, would appear to make sense for the Welshman, who has managed just 3 Premier League appearances to this point in the campaign.

And Elland Road, in turn, could well prove to be his eventual landing spot.

Blues stopper incoming?

The 2nd piece of transfer news focusing on Leeds to have surfaced today, meanwhile, surrounds reinforcements to Marcelo Bielsa’s backline.

Any potential swoop on the part of the Whites, like one for James, would come in the form of a loan.

As per a report from Football Insider, though Leeds are not prepared to splash out a fee on a new defender in January, Bielsa would not be against a temporary addition, on the back of the long-term injury picked up by Robin Koch.

And, in turn, one stopper being considered is Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori.

Once so highly-regarded at Stamford Bridge, Tomori has endured a rough campaign to date, having been afforded just a solitary appearance between the Premier League and Champions League.

This comes with Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma having established themselves as Frank Lampard’s undisputed first-choice central defensive pairing, and both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen also ahead of Tomori in the Blues’ pecking order.

A winter departure from southwest London, therefore, looks a near-certainty, with Leeds one club keeping a close eye on the English international’s situation.
