Leeds register interest in Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi – Standard

Leeds are believed to be expressing an interest in signing Chelsea forward Michy Batshuayi.

Batshuayi’s Chelsea struggles

Chelsea secured Batshuayi’s services back in the summer of 2016.

The Blues are understood to have paid Marseille around £33m for the Belgian.

Such a fee, at the time, appeared reasonable, as Batshuayi had been in sensational form throughout the prior campaign in France.

However, despite having since spent four years on Chelsea’s books, Batshuayi has struggled to come anywhere close to replicating the kind of form that saw the Blues opt to splash out on his signature in the first place.

Instead, the Belgian has been farmed out on a series of loans, to the likes of Valencia, Borussia Dortmund and Crystal Palace.

The 26-year-old returned to Stamford Bridge last summer, as he aimed to carve out a regular starting berth under new boss Frank Lampard.

However, Batshuayi has since again struggled to garner any sort of consistent game-time with his parent club, with the attacker having been afforded just one Premier League start across the entirety of the campaign.

Leeds eyeing Batshuayi

With Timo Werner now a Chelsea player, meanwhile, Batshuayi looks set to fall even further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge next season.

It should also be noted that Batshuayi will be out of contract next year.

As a result, Chelsea will no doubt be keen to move the centre-forward on this summer, before investing the money brought in elsewhere.

And, according to the Evening Standard, the Blues have recently been handed a boost in their hopes of parting with Batshuayi.

The Standard’s report explains that:

Chelsea have been handed a boost in their efforts to sell striker Michy Batshuayi after newly-promoted Leeds United registered an interest.

Batshuayi previously worked under Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa during his days at Marseille, so a move up north could well prove appealing for the Belgian.

A potential fee is not touched upon in the report, but, when considering the combination of his contract situation and struggles for game time, one would imagine that Chelsea will be unlikely to recoup a fee anywhere close to the £33 million which they originally splashed out for Batshuayi.
