Leeds chief admits it will be ‘challenging’ to sign Ben White

Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear has spoken out over the prospect of the newly-promoted outfit signing Ben White this summer.

White’s Leeds stint

White is a Brighton player, but spent this past season on loan in the Championship with Leeds.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men, of course, went on to secure their long-awaited return to the Premier League, having topped the Championship table by a considerable margin.

White, meanwhile, featured in all 46 of the Peacocks’ league outings, playing a key role in the Yorkshire-based club keeping the tightest defence in the division.

All told, Leeds conceded just 35 goals in 46 league outings this term.

White to Leeds ‘challenging’

As such, with White having played such a key role in Leeds’ recent success, news that the Yorkshire-based outfit are keen to retain the defender’s services for next season has come as little surprise.

However, Leeds actually managing to bring White back to Elland Road appears an increasingly unlikely scenario.

The Whites have reportedly already seen several bids rejected by Brighton, the latest of which was understood to have been worth a hefty £25m.

It was also reported on Wednesday that Leeds’ attempts to sign White have hit a brick wall, as Brighton continue to insist that he is not for sale.

As such, now, as mentioned above, Leeds’ chief executive has weighed in on the situation.

And though he didn’t definitively rule out White’s return, Angus Kinnear did admit that securing a deal will prove ‘challenging’:

“Ben had a wonderful season for us last season.

“He is a player that we rate very highly, we know the fans love him and we think Ben enjoyed his time here. We have made no secret of the fact that we would like to bring him here permanently.

“We also have to be very respectful of the fact that he is a Brighton player, he is training with them currently and there have been discussions.

“I think it is going to be challenging to make him a Leeds United player but if it is not Ben White, then we have other options which are in advanced stages and we will be closing in on one of them soon.”

As showcased above, Kinnear also mentions that Leeds have other options whom they are looking at to reinforce the club’s backline, with one such player, according to the Telegraph, coming in the form of German international Robin Koch.
