Jurgen Klopp encourages bids for Divock Origi after last-gasp winner at Wolves

Jurgen Klopp encourages bids for Divock Origi after last-gasp winner at Wolves

Origi shopped after last-gasp winner

Liverpool climbed to the top of the table in the Premier League today, making good on their chances in the wake of Chelsea’s 3-2 loss at West Ham in the lunchtime fixture, and have Belgian international forward Divck Origi to thank for their continued ascendancy after he slammed home his stoppage-time winner against Wolves at Molineux.

The Reds made matters difficult for themselves after an entirely one-way affair against Bruno Lage’s overachievers, boasting 66.6% of possession while registering 17-shots to Wolves’ three in a performance that warranted so much more than just the single goal.

Diogo Jota will come under heavy criticism for his shocking miss earlier in the match after he was through on goal with only Conor Coady and Max Kilman holding the goal line after the Portuguese forward broke past keeper José Sá and center-back Romain Saïss, only to smash his close-range effort right into Coady’s midriff.

Origi, who came off the bench in the 68th minute, was presented with his chance in the third minute of stoppage time and his last-gasp winner earned praise from boss Jürgen Klopp, who jumped on the opportunity to shop the Belgian, should he seek a fresh start elsewhere as a first-choice option in the number 9 role;

“If I was at another club, I’d go for Origi. This team is outstanding so if you are 12 or 13 you’re an incredible player. He’s a striker. He’s been here for a long time at Liverpool and scored some of the most important goals in the history of this club. So I am very happy.”

Belgian cements cult-hero status at Liverpool

This was hardly the first time that Divock Origi has come up big in key moments for Liverpool across his 166-appearances for the Reds since his arrival in 2014.

Though he has been shipped out on loan twice to LOSC Lille and VfL Wolfsburg respectively while rarely being called upon and viewed as the leading light in the Liverpool forward line, a handful of magical moments have come by way of the Oostend-native regardless of his limited status in the first-team.

A last-gasp winner against bitter rivals Everton is fondly remembered and certainly trumps his effort earlier today against Wolves, but millions around the world will point to his key performances in the club’s run to Champions League glory in 2018-19, when Origi’s brace against Barcelona helped reverse a 3-0 first-leg loss against the Catalan giants, sending Liverpool to the final against Tottenham where he also scored as the Reds were sent into rapture.

Divock Origi may never be the star that many would have hoped, but his name will go down in Liverpool lore as a player that came up big when it mattered most; and for some, that is more than enough.
