Manchester United keen on Leonardo Bonucci
Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport (via Tutto Mercato Web) have produced a very intriguing transfer rumour on Wednesday.
They claim Jose Mourinho is on a charm offensive to sign AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci.
At 31, Bonucci remains one of the best central defenders in world football and would undoubtedly improve Manchester United.
Bonucci stunned world football by leaving Juventus for AC Milan last summer, in a move reportedly made due to family issues.
That transfer has not worked out this season, with Juventus claiming the Italian domestic double and AC Milan finishing outside the Serie A top four.
Jose Mourinho moves for Bonucci
According to Tuttosport, Bonucci is Jose Mourinho’s first choice to sign this summer.
And, AC Milan would be willing to sell as they could generate plenty of cash and also get a high earner off their wage bill.
Tuttosport report that Mourinho has been in touch with Bonucci to question whether he would join Manchester United this summer and if AC Milan will sell.
Can Tuttosport be trusted?
Any deal would cost Manchester United around 40 million euros.
Manchester United, according to the Italian press, tried to sign Bonucci two years ago but were knocked back by the then-Juventus defender.
As many have pointed out, Tuttosport are not a great source of transfer news, unless it concerns Juventus players, and in this case Bonucci plays for AC Milan.
Do Manchester United need a new central defender?
Manchester United have been linked with plenty of central defenders this summer. Toby Alderweireld is expected to be on their radar in the coming weeks.
But, Manchester United boasted a very strong defence this past season.
On Saturday, in the FA Cup final, Manchester United are expected to start with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in the centre of their backline.
