Ismaila Sarr’s agent claims Man United & Liverpool wanted to sign winger in summer

Ismaila Sarr’s agent claims Man United & Liverpool wanted to sign winger in summer

Sarr’s Watford stint

Watford secured Ismaila Sarr’s signature in the summer of 2019, from French outfit Stade Rennais.

The then-Premier League side are believed to have paid £27m to bring the winger to Vicarage Road.

And even though Watford had a pretty poor 2019/20, which eventually resulted in their relegation to the Championship, Sarr nevertheless enjoyed a solid season.

All told, the pacy winger managed to notch five goals and six assists in 28 league outings.

Sarr has since gone on to enjoy a decent 2020/21 campaign in the Championship thus far, too, bagging five goals and two assists in 24 games.

Man United & Liverpool wanted Sarr

Before the current campaign kicked off, however, it looked highly likely that Sarr was actually set to depart Vicarage Road.

Several Premier League sides, including Liverpool and Manchester United, were credited with an interest in the Senegalese international during the delayed summer transfer window.

And now, Sarr’s agent, Thierno Seydi, has revealed just how close his client came to joining both Liverpool and United:

“With Liverpool, a few days ago, we were at the stage of signing the contract that would tie the Reds to Ismaila Sarr.

“Everything was sorted: the monthly wages and the length of the deal. I’d even asked Sadio Mane to find him an apartment.

“But it in the end, they weren’t able to put the €40 million (£35m/$49m) on the table to finalise the deal.

“You have to say that if English clubs that once animated the transfer window are struggling to put funds together, that shows the depth of the crisis affecting football.”

On Man United’s interest, Seydi added:

“During the summer, they wanted to sign him. At the last moment, they offered a loan without the option to buy.

“Watford did not accept this because they wanted the loan to include an agreement to buy him.”
