Insight into Newcastle’s pursuit of Juventus outcast Aaron Ramsey

Newcastle happy to invest in Ramsey

Newcastle United have yet to get the ball rolling on their new lease on life after the club was purchased by a consortium ownership group led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, but could be lining up their first big move for January in the vein of former Arsenal cult hero Aaron Ramsey.

Ramsey has failed to make his next port of call a long-term posting in Turin after his free move from the Emirates back in the summer of 2019, as the Welshman ended an 11-year spell at Arsenal where he helped guide the Gunners to a trio of FA Cup successes.

Despite his reputation for both club and country built during his time at Arsenal, Ramsey has failed to kick on in Serie A and now finds himself on the outside looking in at Juventus, logging just one starting appearance and a total of 112-minutes of football under Massimiliano Allegri.

According to the Mirror, not only are Newcastle said to be interested in acquiring his services in January in a potential Premier League return, but are not put off by the midfielder’s mammoth £400k/week wages.

With his contract up in the summer, it is not expected that Ramsey would cost much in terms of an up-front transfer fee.

Magpies must go full steam ahead in January

Despite officially becoming the richest club in the world after they were rescued from the clutches of hated owner Mike Ashley, Newcastle still have a mountain of work to do if their financial backing is to mean anything this season.

The latest managerial link has them tracking Belgian boss Roberto Martinez in interest that is perhaps a little unexpected, but while the need for the club to shape their tactical identity is vital, even more vital is how Newcastle plan to heavily reinforce the team under whichever manager they entrust to guide the new project.

A veteran Premier League performer like Aaron Ramsey would go a long way to setting the right tone for the project, but the club will certainly be under immense pressure to get things right on and off the pitch as quickly as possible.
