Implications for Saliba? Arsenal confirm Ben White’s squad number as arrival from Brighton made official

Premier League giants Arsenal have, on Friday, confirmed the big-money signing of Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White.

Gunners switch

Speculation surrounding Seagulls stopper White had of course proven rampant throughout the summer to date.

This came with the 23-year-old, on the back of a stellar debut campaign back at the Amex, having been identified as the ideal addition to his side’s ranks by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

A lengthy back-and-forth, in turn, ensued, as those in a position of power at the Emirates pushed their Brighton counterparts towards a sale, whilst the board on the South coast stood firm over their understandably considerable demands.

In the end, though, as expected, a deal worth a fee in the region of 50 million pounds, was struck.

A delay in the transfer being made official followed, with White having of course been called up to take his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020.

With the Three Lions’ stars having since returned from vacation on the back of their finale heartbreak, though, Arsenal, today, have secured their man.

As revealed in a series of posts across the club’s social media platforms, the Gunners have added White to previous summer additions Nuno Tavares and Sambi Lokonga, with the defender having put pen to paper on a ‘long-term’ contract in the English capital:

White in/Saliba out?

Also significant when it comes to White’s Arsenal switch, meanwhile, is the squad number handed to Mikel Arteta’s latest recruit.

This comes with the now ex-Brighton man set to don the no.4 for the season ahead.

As noted by droves of concerned Gunners supporters online, this is the shirt which was initially allocated to William Saliba, upon his own Emirates switch being announced back in 2019:

The decision to reassign the youngster’s jersey, in turn, has resulted in inevitable suggestions that Saliba – currently on loan at Ligue 1 outfit Marseille – may yet depart North London without ever having managed a senior appearance:
