Goalkeeper signing an ‘absolute priority’ at Southampton with Sam Johnstone on shortlist

Goalkeeper signing an ‘absolute priority’ at Southampton with Sam Johnstone on shortlist

Southampton’s summer window

Southampton enjoyed a fairly active summer window on both the incoming and outgoing fronts.

The Saints would bring in seven players, with six joining on permanent deals.

Adam Armstrong was secured from Blackburn, Romain Perraud from Stade Brest, Lyanco from Torino, Valentino Livramento from Chelsea, Theo Walcott from Everton and Thierry Small from the Toffees, all on permanent deals, whilst Armando Broja made the move to the south coast on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

On the departures front, Southampton lost some key senior players, as Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard departed for Aston Villa and Leicester City respectively.

Elsewhere, Angus Gunn, Mario Lemina, Michael Obafemi, Wesley Hoedt and Ryan Bertrand would also depart St Mary’s.

Southampton eyeing a keeper

And now, it appears that Southampton are already turning their attentions towards recruitment in 2022.

According to The Athletic, securing a new goalkeeper is viewed behind the scenes as an absolute priority at Southampton.

With Gunn having left for Norwich City over the summer, Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster are now the Saints’ two main shot-stoppers.

But with Forster out of contract at the end of the season, it appears as though the Hampshire outfit will need to dip into the market for another option between the posts.

And The Athletic have already named one potential target of Ralph Hasenhuttl and co.

That man is West Brom star, Sam Johnstone:

Southampton have already drawn up a shortlist of possible targets to fill the void soon to be left by Forster. The Athletic is led to believe West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone features high up on that list.

Johnstone, like Forster, is now in the final year of his contract, meaning Southampton could be set to sign him for free.
