Fresh insight into January attempts by Newcastle to land Jesse Lingard

Newcastle and Jesse Lingard; a match currently not made in Premier League heaven as further insight has come to the surface surrounding the Magpies’ pursuit of the out-of-favour Manchester United midfielder as the St. James’ Park outfit remain on the hunt for January reinforcements.

According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, the club continue to move hard for Lingard given his current status at United. But despite the England man being open to a move to St. James’ Park before the window slams shut, United appear to be reluctant to let Lingard depart the club in January on loan presumably because they would rather secure a fee for a player they are about to lose for nothing in another six months.

Where do Newcastle turn to next?

The situation is surely a frustrating one for Newcastle this month despite the Scrooge McDuck vault of cash they now are the proud owners of thanks to their new conglomerate ownership.

But money will only get you so far when the current reality in the Premier League table paints a picture that the club may well be unable to avoid relegation come the end of term. And in that light, it was also mentioned by Edwards that clubs that Newcastle contact continue to drive the price up because of the Magpies’ financial backing but also the distaste for January business.

Moreover, many players simply are likely to not want to join a relegation scrap that may end in being consigned to Championship football next season irrespective of the big wages they may receive for completing a move to Tyneside.

A harsh reality is that wealthy ownership in the Premier League, or any league, can only be given a true platform to aid in change on and off the pitch if the initial platform was not in a desperate state. Because Newcastle could not offer that, they may still end up paying the ultimate price once again.
