  • Everton clear favourites to land Vermaelen

Under fire Ronald Koeman could turn to a familiar face to strengthen his defence in January, according to Ladbrokes.

Everton have picked up just seven points from as many games in the Premier League this season and the Dutch boss is the 4/7 favourite to be the next manager to leave his post.

But the Toffees have been installed as the clear 7/4 favourites to land Barcelona ace Thomas Vermaelen in a shock deal.

    Vermaelen backed Koeman

Vermaelen has publicly backed his former Ajax boss to succeed at Goodison Park, leading the bookies to price up his next destiantion.

The Belgian centre-half had been linked with a move back to the Premier League earlier in the summer with Watford previously priced as favourites to strike a deal. But recent developments have meant the market has changed completely.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Koeman could do with a player like Vermaelen to shore things up at the back, and the fact the pair worked together at Ajax certainly strengthens Everton’s chances of signing the defender when the window opens again.”

Vermaelen unhappy with Barcelona playing time

The Belgian defender has over the past few days announced that he is unhappy with his playing time currently at Barcelona.

Vermaelen: “I had to stay in spite of the interest of several clubs, now I cannot even play with the second team, it is a difficult situation.”

“It is clear that in a club like Barcelona, three central defenders are not enough, they need four or five.”

“A suspension or an injury will mean that I can return to the squad and these things can happen quickly. Whilst things aren’t going well at the moment, next week may be different.”
