Eddie Howe provides concerning Newcastle transfer update

Newcastle vs Watford

Newcastle are set to play out a huge Premier League clash this weekend.

The Magpies will play host to Watford in a game that could prove to be a massive one when it comes to their hopes of survival.

Newcastle are currently 19th in the English top-flight, having won just one game from 19 attempts. However, despite their dismal record, they remain just two points behind 17th-placed Watford.

The North East outfit also have a game in hand on the Hornets. So, a win on Saturday, followed by a win in their game in hand would see Eddie Howe’s side take a major step towards survival.

Eddie Howe’s concerning Newcastle transfer update

Ahead of the Watford game, Eddie Howe has spoken out about transfers.

Newcastle have signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood so far this month.

And whilst both are solid signings, Newcastle are yet to address their centre-back woes, a key problem area at the club – as evidenced by the fact that they have conceded 42 goals in 19 league games this term.

The Northern Echo report that Newcastle’s recruitment team have made bids for Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos, but have been unable to reach an agreement over either.

In turn, when speaking on Friday, Howe confirmed that Newcastle are not currently close to a new signing:

“We’re not close to anyone else currently. The squad of players we have will be the squad of players we have for Watford.

“We are looking. We’ve got time left in the window, and we know we need to move quickly if we need to try to add more players.

“Obviously, we’re still active in the market, but there’s no immediate news to give you on that front.”

This, of course, means that the Magpies will face Watford without some much-needed centre-back reinforcements. Should Newcastle not manage to bring in a centre-back during the winter window as a whole, one would assume that it will massively impact their chances of staying up.
