Debut next week? Amid Barcelona links, insight provided into Arteta’s plans for Arsenal prodigy Patino

As some of Europe’s top clubs begin sniffing around his signature, an insight into Mikel Arteta’s plans for Arsenal talent Charlie Patino has, on Thursday, been forthcoming.

Who is Patino?

Patino, 17, is currently carving his path through the youth ranks of Premier League giants Arsenal.

The starlet is a midfielder by trade, boasting a whole range of standout technical attributes.

After beginning to catch the eye with the Gunners’ U18s last season, Patino, despite his tender years, was subsequently called up to feature for the club’s U23s, in the Premier League 2.

And the months since have only seen the Englishman go from strength to strength, amid suggestions that Patino is not just one of, but THE most promising talent currently plying his trade on the red half of North London.

This is certainly an opinion shared by the man who proved the deciding voice in luring the teen to the capital early in his fledgling career, with Brian Stapleton, Gunners scout, having recently provided an insight into Patino’s talents:

‘Of all the years I’ve been scouting, he’s the best kid I’ve ever seen.’

‘I got a tip off about Charlie from a guy, so I went over there and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. He was 11 and I think he was playing in the Under-13s, and I was like ‘wow’.’

‘His first touch was unbelievable, his vision, his awareness of space. He was way above his years, he was on another planet to anyone else on the pitch.’

‘I made a phone call to my head of my department at Arsenal at the time, Sean O’Connor. He asked what I thought and I said, ‘well, I’m not coming back again. I don’t need to see any more, you need to sign this kid straight away.’

Wimbledon bow?

It will therefore no doubt come as a source of concern for all associated with Arsenal that one of European football’s biggest clubs have today been named as keen on Patino’s services.

The outfit in question? Barcelona.

As per a report from The Mirror, not only are the La Liga heavyweights fans of the midfielder’s profile, but Patino himself would likely be interested in a Camp Nou switch, owing to his status as a supporter of the Blaugrana.

Mikel Arteta, though, appears determined to ensure that another of the long list of up-and-coming talents to have emerged in the English capital will be going nowhere any time soon.

Amid suggestions that Patino will, next month, be offered a new contract at the Emirates upon turning 18, the Gunners’ boss is ready to throw the youngster in at the deep end.

Patino is expected to be named in the squad which welcomes AFC Wimbledon to North London for a League Cup third round clash next week, with a debut off the bench looking likely, amid increasingly impressive showings in first-team training.
