West Ham boss Moyes ‘desperate’ to bring in defender before transfer window closes

Newcastle down West Ham

The Premier League, of course, returned to our screens on Saturday.

The day’s action-packed schedule came to a close with a meeting between Newcastle and West Ham.

The Hammers enjoyed a decent spell of form at the back end of 2019/20, narrowly avoiding relegation thanks to some Michail Antonio heroics.

However, against Steve Bruce’s Newcastle, the London outfit were simply not up to scratch.

Goals from Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick, both of whom were making their Newcastle debuts, saw the Magpies emerge with a 2-0 win.

In truth, though, the game could have easily finished 4 or 5 nil.

Moyes eyeing a centre-back

One of West Ham’s many weak spots vs Newcastle came at centre-half.

This has been an area of concern for the Irons for some time now, with the club evidently well aware of the issue.

It was recently claimed that David Moyes’ men had seen a £27m bid for Burnley’s James Tarkowski knocked back.

FourFourTwo have also reported on Sunday that:

West Ham boss David Moyes remains desperate to bring in a defender before the transfer window closes.

Moyes himself, meanwhile, spoke out regarding West Ham’s issues at centre-half post-Newcastle, confirming that the club do indeed hope to reinforce the heart of their backline:

“I think that defensively we have been short of numbers and the competition that I want so that has been a problem. If we get an injury or suspension then we will be really short.

“We are trying to get players in. Let me tell you, there are plenty getting offered. We’re trying to get ones in who will have a similar impact to Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen, people we feel can go forward with us.

“But yes, we want to add to that department.”
