Chelsea & Rennes reportedly yet to agree fee for Mendy/Lampard insists he is happy with Kepa

The Chelsea faithful’s respective hopes of seeing a new goalkeeper arrive at the club the near future have seemingly been dealt a blow.

Kepa makes another mistake

Of course, the main reason Chelsea’s fans are keen to see a new face between the sticks at Stamford Bridge is the form of record-signing Kepa.

The Spaniard endured an awful 2019/20, which saw Frank Lampard drop his no.1 across two separate spells during the season.

And, after returning to starting duties vs Brighton on Monday, unsurprisingly, the former Athletic Bilbao man put on yet another questionable display.

Kepa’s inability to command his area and deal with crosses was once again evident, whilst he also should certainly done a lot better with Leandro Trossard’s second-half goal.

Lampard backs Kepa

Despite yet another questionable display vs the Seagulls, though, Frank Lampard moved to back Kepa post-match, stating that he is very happy with his no. 1:

“I am very happy with Kepa. With the shot, I’m not sure if he could have done any better but I saw a bit more confidence in how he was playing. Kepa is here, he is our ‘keeper and I am happy with him.

“If we are bringing in competition it will be competition. That’s the nature of Chelsea. That goes through the squad, so we’ll see.”

When drawn on the possibility of imminent goalkeeping reinforcements arriving at Chelsea, meanwhile, Lampard added:

“Not at the moment. There are obviously some weeks to go until the end of the transfer window.

“We’ve got a big squad now as well so we have to manage that and look at how we move forward in terms of getting the right level of competition within the squad, but no news on that one at the minute.”

These comments no doubt came as something of a surprise to the Blues faithful, who have long been anticipating the arrival of Edouard Mendy.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper enjoyed a superb 2019/20 with Rennes, and has been heavily linked with Chelsea of late.

It was even claimed last week that Mendy had agreed a five-year deal with the Premier League giants, before another report suggested that Rennes had accepted an offer from Chelsea.

Now, though, on the back of Lampard’s comments, RMC Sport’s Mohamed Bouhafsi has assured that the two clubs are in fact yet to agree a deal for Mendy:
