Bad for Chelsea: Odds slashed on Virgil Van Dijk’s Man City move

Southampton & Virgil Van Dijk

Chelsea beat Southampton 1-0 on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.

A brilliant free-kick from Marcos Alonso settled the match in Chelsea’s favour.

From a Southampton perspective, they’ve now lost two matches in a week following the 4-1 drumming at the hands of Leicester.

Mauricio Pellegrino reacted to the Leicester defeat by rotating his squad against Chelsea.

And perhaps the most noticeable change was that Virgil Van Dijk was dropped versus the Blues.

After the match Pellegrino tried to suggest VVD was benched for fatigue reasons. Yet, with the January transfer window just about to open, Van Dijk’s omission instantly lead many to suggest to Dutch defender is set to leave St Mary’s.

Chelsea vs Man City

A group of Premier League clubs have been linked to Van Dijk.

Liverpool tried to sign him last summer, while Chelsea and Man City have also been linked to the 25-year-old.

On Monday, bookmakers Ladbrokes has slashed odds of Van Dijk moving to Man City.

Liverpool have been odds-on shots to be the Southampton defender’s next port of call since July, but the bookies now make Pep Guardiola’s men the 10/11 favourites for his signatures.

Chelsea have also leapfrogged the Reds in the market, with 5/2 now on offer for the Dutch international swapping St Mary’s for Stamford Bridge, while 3/1 says he finally joins Liverpool.

And with Antonio Conte calling for one of the big six clubs to hijack a move from City for Van Dijk, Arsenal (12/1), Man United (16/1) and Tottenham (16/1) al currently have outsides chances of striking a deal.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “The winter transfer window is just around the corner, and Van Dijk looks set to be at the centre of another transfer war, although this time it’s City who seem to be winning the race.”

The Odds: Virgil van Dijk’s Next Club
