Petr Cech can’t reach 200
Arsenal goalie Petr Cech has been waiting for almost three months to keep a historic Premier League clean sheet.
Cech is one match away from reach the 200 EPL clean sheets landmark, but he simply cannot get over the line.
Arsenal have been woeful in recent weeks; no Premier League have lost more matches (8) than Arsenal in 2018.
Last weekend Arsenal lost 2-1 at Brighton, and Cech was at fault for both goals.
After the game the keeper took to Twitter to apologise. That was a nice touch, but Arsenal need performances and wins, not sorries on social media.
Arsenal target Bayer Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno
The big news in German paper Bild on Tuesday is that Arsenal are chasing Bayer Leverkusen goalie Bernd Leno.
26-year-old Leno is a German international. This season he’s made 25 appearances, conceding 33 goals and scoring 7 clean sheets.
In an amazing stat, Leno has only missed three matches for Bayer in the last seven and a half years. He’s played 226 games of a possible 229.
Leno is also more than a goalie – he’s a sweeper keeper. Proving that point, Leno has averaged more touches of the ball and played more passes than any other goalkeeper in the Bundesliga this season.
So why would Bayer sell Leno?
Bayer Leverkusen dearly want to retain their number one.
But there’s a problem: Leno has a get-clause in his contract which allows the keeper to leave Bayer for around 25 million pounds.
This clause is active until 2020 and, to be clear, Leno can agree to leave Leverkusen for the pre-agreed fee and the club have no recourse but to accept it.
Of course, the only way Bayer could change this situation would be to agree a new deal with Leno that carved out that clause. But that doesn’t seem to be an option the keeper is willing to entertain.
Napoli vs Arsenal
Bild announce that Leno is “looking for a new challenge”.
The club leading the charge are Napoli. The Serie A club are poised to need a new goalie this summer as Pepe Reina is set to exit Naples.
But Napoli face a challenge from Arsenal. Bild confirm the Gunners have “expressed interest” in Leno.
