Brentford’s Benrahma reportedly close to West Ham / Former Championship stars shining bright in the top-tier

Still there?

It is somewhat surprising that Said Benrahma remains a Brentford player at this point. The Algerian winger was one of the most highly-rated players in the Championship last season.

The Bees pushed for promotion, reaching the play-off final. However, in the end, they stuttered, with Fulham promoted, and Brentford left to wonder what might have been.

One major concern to have stemmed from their failure to secure a Premier League berth no doubt came in the form of the club’s ability to hang on to their top players.

Ollie Watkins has already moved on to Aston Villa in a multi-million pound deal, with Championship quality bleeding into the top-tier. The prolific attacker was central to the Villans’ drubbing of Liverpool last weekend, bagging a hat-trick.

Unsurprisingly, Premier League clubs have now begun to make their moves for other Championship talent ahead of the closure of the domestic window, with Benrahma seemingly top of the list.

17 goals and 9 assists last season mean that the type of hefty figures being touted for the wide-man do not come as much of a surprise.

Hammered home

The club reportedly leading the chase for Benrahma is West Ham United. The figure touted for his signature comes in around the £30 million mark.

It is unsurprising to see West Ham switch transfer tactics from previous seasons, following the success of Jared Bowen. Huge amounts have been spent on talent from the continent, on the likes of Felipe Anderson, Sebastien Haller and Andriy Yarmolenko.

The trio’s total cost bordered on the £100 million mark. Yet none have proven shining lights for the Hammers. Instead, it has been stars plucked from the Championship stealing the show.

Michail Antonio, signed from Nottingham Forest, and Bowen, signed from Hull City, have enjoyed a stellar start to the campaign.

It should be noted that Pablo Fornals, signed from Villarreal, has also performed well on the left, but the signing of Benrahma would likely push Fornals into a more central attacking role. This would see David Moyes forced to revert to a back-four, or omit Fornals entirely.

No matter the manner in which Moyes chooses to setup, though, the Hammers’ options, if Benrahma arrives, look extremely exciting.
