Brendan Rodgers’ comments on Leicester transfers are bad news for Arsenal-linked James Maddison

James Maddison linked with Arsenal

Since Martin Odegaard’s return to Real Madrid, it has been clear that Arsenal need another creative midfielder, to take some of the burden off the shoulders of Emile Smith Rowe.

Smith Rowe was brilliant for Arsenal in the second half last season, but he nevertheless only really has six months’ worth of top-flight experience under his belt, and should therefore not be the Gunners’ only source of central creativity.

Mikel Arteta and co., as a result, have targeted a number of players to help provide cover and support for Smith Rowe. Emi Buendia was linked early in the window, but Aston Villa beat Arsenal to that signing.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison was also touted as an option back in June:

And such links to Maddison have come back to the fore of late, too.

However, recent comments on the part of Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers will no doubt come as a blow to Arsenal.

When quizzed on potential departures from the club over the weeks ahead, the North Irishman assured that Leicester do not need the funds raised through the sale of any stars, before adding that the Foxes ‘have no plans to lose anyone’:

‘In conversations with the club, we don’t have to sell. That’s something that’s been made clear.

‘The players want to stay. It’s a really exciting time at the club.

‘There’s lots of gossip and speculation around but I’m loving working with the guys here, they love being here, and we certainly have no need to sell. So I would suspect we’re looking to keep our best players. We have no plans to lose anyone. We’re keen not to lose anyone.’
