Blow for Arsenal as goalkeeper target Onana agrees personal terms elsewhere

Blow for Arsenal as goalkeeper target Onana agrees personal terms elsewhere

Ajax shot-stopper Andre Onana has this weekend agreed to the personal terms of a contract with Olympique Lyonnais, dealing Premier League giants Arsenal something of a blow.

Leno to move on?

The situation between the posts in North London has of course been thrown up in the air in a major way of late.

This comes amid surprise speculation surrounding the future of current no.1 Bernd Leno.

The German endured a somewhat hit-and-miss campaign last time out, with a series of high-profile blunders – most notably versus Everton – having seen his first-choice status called into question.

Leno himself, meanwhile, when drawn on the subject, was not shy in admitting back in April that he is open to the idea of a ‘new adventure’, away from the Emirates:

‘I don’t know what will come in the future, but I’m open to everything.’

‘Maybe for a new adventure or to stay at Arsenal.’

Gunners blow

In turn, whilst seeking out a new goalkeeper had previously been regarded as some way down the list of priorities for those in a position of power at Arsenal, it could soon become a pressing issue.

And, as outlined above, on Sunday, an altogether noteworthy update on the situation has been forthcoming.

One shot-stopper who has of course been persistently tipped for a potential move to the English capital of late has been Ajax star Andre Onana.

Ahead of the expiration of his contract at the Johan Cruijff ArenA next summer, it has been suggested that the Cameroonian could be available for as little as £7 million, the kind of fee which, considering his pedigree, has unsurprisingly piqued attentions on the red half of North London.

As outlined above, though, if the latest word stemming from the European media on Sunday is anything to go by, then any plans on the part of Mikel Arteta and co. when it comes to Onana’s potential signing have been dealt a serious blow.

As revealed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 25-year-old has agreed to the personal terms of a deal with Ligue 1 outfit Lyon.

Such claims come fresh on the back of reports elsewhere that Onana would indeed favour a move to the Groupama Stadium over the Emirates this summer.

One potential saving grace for Arsenal is the fact that Lyon are yet to agree a transfer fee with Ajax, but, as things stand, it looks altogether unlikely that the shot-stopper will be plying his trade in the English capital next season.
