Benfica hope to lock down €45m-rated Nico Gaitan as Man United & Monaco prepare bids [Record]

Portuguese paper Record report on Wednesday that Manchester United and Monaco may be about to make a move for Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan.

26-year-old Gaitan has long been rumoured to be looking to move away from Benfica, with the player’s current deal expiring in the summer of 2016.

Record now claim that Benfica are trying to lock down the Argentine creative midfielder to a new deal, however should the player refuse to renew, then the Eagles could offload the player now.

Were a sale to happen, Benfica would be aiming to scoop €45m for the player. Whether anyone would pay such a fee, however, is up for debate.

As it is, one suspects that Record are namedropping Manchester United and Monaco in an effort to offer the player some leverage when discussing terms with Benfica.

Gaitan made 42 appearances for Benfica last season, scoring seven goals and bagging 10 assists.
