Chelsea target Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud
There’s a huge transfer story in the Times on Friday which may have far reaching implications for Arsenal, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.
As is now common knowledge, Arsenal are trying to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund this January.
One of the rumours which has been floated is that French international Olivier Giroud could be used as a makeweight in the Aubameyang transfer.
But are Chelsea about to take that option off the table?
In a potentially massive piece of news, it’s now reported that Chelsea are trying to sign Giroud in the current window.
Antonio Conte is a Giroud fan
Of course, Chelsea have been linked with a long list of attackers this new year.
Some of the names have seemed farcical, including Stoke’s Peter Crouch and Burnley’s Ashley Barnes. Other targets include Roma centre-forward Edin Dzeko.
But could the Blues now land Arsenal’s Giroud instead? The Times tell the story as follows:
Chelsea are still considering alternatives to Dzeko, with Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud the latest to be discussed after his proposed loan to Borussia Dortmund appeared to fall through.
The France striker fits Conte’s profile of a target man with Premier League experience, although whether his club would sanction a move across London remains to be seen.
If Chelsea were to sign Giroud, that would be a major coup for the Blues.
It’s also worth noting that Giroud is under pressure to leave Arsenal this winter as he’s not getting the minutes he needs in a World Cup year.
But would he get that much-needed game time at Stamford Bridge? And how much would Chelsea need to offer to get the deal done?
With less than a week remaining in the January window, is there enough time to work out all these issues?
And will Arsenal really allow Alexis Sanchez and Giroud leave for Man United and Chelsea in the same window?
Where does that leave Aubameyang’s Arsenal move?
Arsenal fans may react badly to the Giroud to Chelsea story.
Aside from believing the Gunners are helping out their biggest rivals, they may be concerned about how that potential deal affects efforts to sign Aubameyang.
It’s been widely reported that Borussia Dortmund are keen on bringing Giroud to their club as part of any Aubameyang deal.
If Chelsea sign the striker instead, will that encourage BVB to reject any offer for Arsenal for Auba?
