PSG 1 – Real Madrid 2
Another season, another year of disappointment for PSG in the Champions League.
Has it now been proven that the Champions League cannot be bought?
After an incredible outlay last summer, in which Kylian Mbappe and Neymar joined for mega money, PSG have again missed out on the biggest prize in club football.
PSG have never been further than the quarterfinals of the UCL.
Against Real Madrid, PSG ultimately lost 5-2 on aggregate. 3-1 after the Spanish leg, Cristiano Ronaldo killed off Unai Emery’s team with a header in the second half.
While Edinson Cavani gave PSG brief hope of a fightback, a deflected Casmerio goal sunk the Parisians for good.
Marco Verratti let his team down badly getting sent off for dissent in the 66th minute.
Arsenal, Tottenham & Chelsea
PSG’s defeat could have a major impact in the Premier League.
It’s now widespread belief that Unai Emery will be sacked at the end of the season as PSG try to rebuild once again.
Who will be the next PSG boss?
That issues was discussed on the BBC after the Madrid defeat, and according to French football expert Julien Laurens one manger PSG won’t go for is Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger.
While it’s true that PSG tried to poach the Arsenal boss previously, Wenger’s current plight in north London means he’s no longer an option.
But instead of Arsenal’s manager, could PSG sign Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino?
Pochettino appears to be one of the frontrunners for PSG, along with Chelsea’s Antonio Conte.
Many will consider Conte to be the easier option for PSG to lock down considering how Chelsea’s campaign has panned out.
Of course, both Pochettino and Conte may have other options too this summer.
The Italian FA have made it clear they want Conte to leave Chelsea and return to the Azzurri, while Tottenham’s Pochettino has also been named as a possible successor to Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.
