Arsenal’s Partey hopes boosted amid claims Lucas Torreira is on verge of Atletico Madrid switch

Suggestions that Arsenal star Lucas Torreira is close to joining Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have begun to mount online this evening.

Exit links

Speculation surrounding the future of Uruguayan international Torreira has of course begun to mount of late.

As Mikel Arteta continues to mould a squad capable of dragging Arsenal back towards the Premier League’s top-4, a host of players have, in turn, been pushed towards the exit door.

Torreira features towards the top of this list, with Arteta having made abundantly clear that both Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos sit firmly ahead of the 24-year-old in his pecking order in the middle of the park.

The pursuit of reinforcements to the midfield ranks at the Emirates, meanwhile, has long been common knowledge.

As such, following just two seasons on the books of the Gunners, the writing appears to be very much on the wall for Torreira.

Atleti bound?

To this point, a whole host of clubs, chiefly from Serie A, have been named as potential landing spots for Arsenal’s out-of-favour midfield general this summer.

The likes of Torino, Fiorentina and AC Milan are all thought to have expressed an interest at some point or another.

As outlined above, though, if the latest media speculation doing the rounds on Sunday is to be believed, then Torreira in fact appears close to a La Liga switch.

In news first reported by Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, it was claimed that Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone had made direct contact with Arsenal, over the possibility of a deal for the South American.

Simeone is said to have watched Torreira in action on a number of occasions this season, with the Argentine tactician a huge fan of his talents.

A potential cash-plus-player agreement, which would send Thomas Partey to north London, in exchange for Torreira, is touted, amid claims that Atletico will not be able to fund a deal, unless they first part with the club’s current midfield star.

Word of Atleti’s fresh interest in Torreira, meanwhile, has since also been picked up elsewhere.

And, significantly, the more recent report regarding the situation comes courtesy of a source considered as highly reliable.

As per Uruguayan football expert Sebas Giovanelli, not only are Atletico interested in Torreira, but the capital outfit are in fact ‘very close’ to clinching a deal for his services:
