Arsenal transfer update; Granit Xhaka expected in Roma camp next week

Arsenal and Swiss international midfielder Granit Xhaka looks set to finally complete his move to Serie A outfit AS Roma.

Sky Sports’ Angelo Mangiante gave an update on the transfer situation, citing that the experienced midfielder was expected to link up with boss José Mourinho and the rest of the I Giallorossi next week at their pre-season training camp in Algarve, Portugal.

This hardly comes as a surprise, with both Mourinho and Xhaka publicly stating their desire for the former Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Basel midfielder to switch capital clubs this summer.

Xhaka looked set to leave the previous summer after a breakdown with the Arsenal fanbase after his sending off against Crystal Palace, but remained with the club one more season on the request of Mikel Arteta who aimed to keep his experience and leadership credentials on board for his first full season on the Emirates touchline.

It was a decision that paid dividends in the end, with Xhaka forming a formidable pivot pairing with new signing Thomas Partey and arguably being one of the Gunners’ standout performers during 2020-21. His summer campaign with Switzerland then saw him help Rossocrociati to a quarter-final finish while putting in consistent and influential displays for his country.

Arsenal have already begun to retool their midfield this summer as well, with the Gunners completing the signing of highly-touted young Belgian U-21 midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht. The club also seemingly remains interested in a more experienced midfielder as well, having been regularly linked with Ruben Neves.

Though final details of a move to Roma have yet to be finalized between the two clubs, it is only a matter of time before a divisive period in his professional career comes to a conclusion.
