Arsenal ‘make contact’ with Manchester United about the future of Donny van de Beek

Arsenal ‘make contact’ with Manchester United about the future of Donny van de Beek

Following a poor season with Manchester United, Arsenal are said to be expressing an interest in Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek’s disappointing Man United stint

Donny van de Beek signed for Man United during the delayed summer window, setting the Red Devils back around £35m.

Van de Beek had spent his previous years impressing with Ajax, and at £35m, looked a fairly decent buy for Man United.

However, despite the midfielder being signed under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s watch, the Norwegian refused to hand the 24-year-old any sort of regular game-time throughout 2020/21.

Van de Beek made 19 Premier League appearances, but just three of those saw him complete 90 minutes – and even at that, two of these outings came right at the end of the campaign when United had nothing left to play for.

Arsenal interested in van de Beek

So, with the summer window now open, it has not been all that surprising to see van de Beek’s future at Old Trafford called into question, despite the Dutchman still having four years left to run on his contract.

The club chiefly linked with the former Ajax man are Arsenal.

Gunners legend Ian Wright has already revealed that he was in favour of his former side snapping up van de Beek:

“Donny van de Beek, he’s someone that I wish someone more like Arsenal could have taken. When you look at [Paul] Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes – that is Donny van de Beek’s position.

“So people are thinking they’re going to see Van de Beek [sitting] with Pogba and Fernandes, but I don’t think that’s going to happen, because as much as he can play there, that’s not his preferred position to play.

“Listen, Donny van de Beek will be a good player for Man United in time because he’s a quality player.

“But is he what they need right now?”

And now, it appears that Wright could see his wish granted, with 90min reporting that Arsenal have made contact with United over the future of the midfielder. It is suggested that the Gunners have asked for their Premier League rivals to keep them updated on van de Beek’s situation at the club.
