Arsenal complete €20m centre-back signing following Trossard capture

Arsenal have completed their second signing of the January transfer window.

The Athletic reported on Friday afternoon that Arsenal are working on a deal to sign Jakub Kiwior from Italian side Spezia for a fee in excess of €20m(£17.5m).

The north London side are said to be looking to sign the central defender to bolster Mikel Arteta’s side as they push for the Premier League title.

However, this does leave the Gunners with Gabriel, Ben White, William Saliba, Rob Holding and Kiwior as natural centre-backs, which seems somewhat excessive, especially as Takehiro Tomiyasu can also fill in at the back when needed.

But Kiwior is left-footed, which means Arsenal no longer have to rely on Gabriel to start every game as he was the Gunenrs’ only left-footed centre-back out of their current crop of stoppers.

The 22-year-old has played 37 games for Spezia in the Serie A since joining them in the summer of 2021.

With a centre-back and a forward now signed, Arsenal will surely turn their attention towards a central midfielder.

Arsenal have cover for both Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka, but it fair to say an injury to either of those players would be a huge blow, unless some more quality back-up can be brought in this month.
