Not as it seemed

France Football today released fresh information regarding the summer transfer saga surrounding Houssem Aouar.

Arsenal’s supporters were of course frantically refreshing their devices during the final days of the transfer window, amid claims that the Gunners were pushing for the 22-year-old.

In reality, however, it appears that this was not the case.

France Football have revealed that it was in fact Juventus that swooped for Aouar with the most intent. It is claimed that the Bianconeri offered up as much as €50 million, along with the opportunity to take Federico Bernardeschi on loan for the remainder of the season.

However, the Italian winger was reluctant to make the move to Ligue 1, causing the deal to break down. Aouar will therefore remain with Lyon until at least until January.

Secret differences

This summer represented the first of what look set to be many of Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar working intimately on Arsenal’s transfer dealings.

Arteta was of course previously promoted to the role of manager, having succeeded in his head coach role.

This decision has since seen the Spaniard become much more involved in the decision making process at the club. With the north Londoners having of course made a host of staff redundant, including a proportion of the recruitment sector, earlier this year, Arteta’s influence is now vital.

The 38-year-old, as per the aforementioned report from France Football, is a huge admirer of Houssem Aouar.

Speaking with the 22-year-old on the phone, Arteta reportedly convinced him that Arsenal was the right project for the next phase of his development.

However, it appears that Edu was not as convinced. France Football even suggest that Edu cited ‘jet lag’ as his reason for not contacting the club’s ownership about furthering their pursuit.

Arsenal ended up signing Thomas Partey on deadline day, with the aid of the Gunners’ owners key to the deal.

In subsequent interviews with, both Edu and Arteta spoke glowingly about the club’s new signing.

Whilst Arteta may now have more say on the ins and outs at the Emirates, the latest evidence suggests that it is technical director Edu who has the final say.
