Antonio Rudiger confirms he is willing to help Chelsea in pursuit of Bundesliga defenders & claims he has had contact with David Alaba

Antonio Rudiger confirms he is willing to help Chelsea in pursuit of Bundesliga defenders & claims he has had contact with David Alaba

Do Chelsea need more centre-backs?

Do Chelsea need to invest in even more centre-backs?

The Blues began the 2020/21 campaign with five senior central defenders on their books.

Under Frank Lampard, Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma formed the centre-back partnership of choice.

Since Thomas Tuchel has come in, meanwhile, Chelsea have switched to a back-three, with Cesar Azpilicueta operating as a right-sided centre-back.

This means that – if Fikayo Tomori returns from his loan at AC Milan – the Blues will boast six central defenders to cover three positions.

So, it would be fair to say that centre-back probably isn’t a priority position to reinforce for Chelsea right now.

Chelsea linked with centre-backs

Despite this, though, the Londoners have been linked with a number of centre-halves recently.

Bild’s Christian Falk reported earlier this month that all of Dayot Upamecano, David Alaba and Niklas Sule were on Chelsea’s shortlist of targets:

Upamecano has of course since joined Bayern Munich, but Chelsea have also been linked with the Bavarians’ Jerome Boateng.

And now, an inside insight into the Pensioners’ key defensive targets could soon be forthcoming.

This comes with the aforementioned Falk having confirmed that Antonio Rudiger has made himself available to answer any questions, in the case that Chelsea move for one of Sule, Boateng or Alaba.

Interestingly, the Blues stopper even claimed to have already made personal contact with the latter:

“If Chelsea were to decide on one of the three players as a transfer target, I would be available to answer any questions. I know Jérôme & Niklas very well and I’ve already had contact with David Alaba”
