Tranmere vs Watford betting tips: FA Cup Third Round Replay match preview & predictions

Tranmere vs Watford prediction: Tranmere 2-1 Watford

After a simply astonishing first meeting at Vicarage Road, these two must go again in a replay.

The prospect of this was completely unthinkable at half time of the original tie.

Watford raced into a 3-0 lead, Tom Dele-Bashiru, Nathaniel Chalobah and Roberto Pereyra with the goals, and it really could have been five or six.

But, Tranmere certainly did not lie down.

Connor Jennings got them back in it before Manny Monthé gave them real hope with 12 minutes remaining.

Then, with just four minutes to play, Mason Barrett challenged Corey Blackett-Taylor.

Corner given but, after a VAR review, Graham Scott said penalty to Tranmere.

Paul Mullin stepped up and emphatically smashed in a famous equaliser.

So, somehow, 3-3 it finished and a replay at Prenton Park is needed.

Can the Super White Army finish what they started and defeat a Premier League side here?

Aside from the FA Cup, it’s been a pretty difficult season for Tranmere Rovers.

In this competition, they beat Wycombe Wanderers after extra time in the replay before hammering Chichester City.

That saw them get to this stage for the second consecutive season having not done so since 2015 before that.

However, Micky Mellon’s side are struggling in League One.

On Saturday, they drew 0-0 with one of the only two clubs below them; Southend United at Roots Hall.

That leaves the Super White Army 21st in the table.

For various reasons, Southend and Bolton are all but set for relegation, leaving just one relegation place.

That position is currently occupied by Tranmere but they’re within at least seven points of the four clubs below them.

Given that Rovers won the League Two play-off final last season, their current position is no surprise.

Before they return to league action, they get the chance to make history.

The winners of this tie will host either Wolverhampton Wanderers or Manchester United in round four.

Can Tranmere beat one Premier League side to setup a glamour home tie with another?

Can Watford get an away win?

As for Watford, the second half collapse ten days ago is about the only setback Nigel Pearson has suffered since taking over in Hertfordshire.

On Sunday afternoon, second half goals from Abdoulaye Doucouré, Troy Deeney and then Roberto Pereyra saw them hammer relegation rivals Bournemouth 3-0 at Dean Court.

That means, in Pearson’s five matches in charge, they’ve taken 13 points; beating Manchester United, Aston Villa and Wolves as well as drawing at Sheffield United.

That means the Hornets are out of the relegation zone for the very first time all season long.

Under Javi Gracia and then Quique Sánchez Flores, they took nine points from 17 matches but are now on 22 from 22 games.

Survival looks likely when it appeared to be mission impossible less than a month ago.

But where does the FA Cup fit into all of this?

They got to only their second final last season, where they were hammered 6-0 by Manchester City.

However, given their perilous position in the Premier League, a repeat run is not the priority.

Will Watford avoid an FA Cup upset at Prenton Park?

Despite a difficult league position, Micky Mellon will name the same XI that started at Southend on Saturday.

This’ll see just two changes from the side that started at Vicarage Road.

Captain Scott Davies is injured so Aaron Chapman will continue to deputise in goal.

In defence, Sid Nelson is injured so Calum Woods will continue in his place alongside Manny Monthé and Peter Clarke at centre-back.

Kieron Morris and Jake Caprice, midfielders by trade, will be at wing-back.

In midfield, Guyana international Neil Danns and Alex Woodyard will continue in the holding positions behind David Perkins.

He’ll be looking to support the front two.

Morgan Ferrier will partner Connor Jennings; will either become a hero?

As for Watford, given that they played Bournemouth as recently as Sunday, Pearson is likely to make 11 changes, just as he did for the first meeting.

In goal, Ben Foster will be rested with Heurelho Gomes deputising, chosen over Daniel Bachmann.

In defence, Adrian Mariappa, Craig Dawson, Craig Cathcart and Adam Masina was Sunday’s back four.

Christian Kabasele could start after he served his one-match suspension at Dean Court.

The Belgian will be joined by Daryl Janmaat, José Cholevas and youngster Bayli Spencer-Adam at the back.

Sebastian Prödl and Kiko Femenía are injured.

In midfield, likewise all of Abdoulaye Doucouré, Étienne Capoue and Nathaniel Chalobah will drop out.

This’ll open the door for Domingos Quina and Tom Dele-Bashiru to start in the centre.

Will Hughes and Tom Cleverley are injured.

In attack, Ismaïla Sarr, Gerard Deulofeu and captain Troy Deeney have been a lethal trio in recent matches.

Thus, none of them will travel to Merseyside.

Out-wide, Roberto Pereyra, who scored off the bench on Sunday as well as in the reverse fixture, and Isaac Success will start.

Further forward, there could be a first start for a January recruit.

18 year old João Pedro, who joined from Fluminense earlier this month, will make his full-debut for the Hornets.

He’ll be supporting Andre Gray.

Will this much changed Watford side still be too strong for Tranmere?
