Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen could join Man City for free

Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen is currently spending most of his time on the Tottenham bench.

Vertonghen recently signed a contract extension to keep him at Spurs until the end of the season.

Yet, when the season closes, the former Ajax man is set to become a free agent. It seems highly unlikely that Vertonghen will sign a new deal with Spurs.

On Tuesday, the Telegraph report that Vertonghen could join Manchester City in the summer. Readers are told:

Tottenham centre-back Jan Vertonghen has also emerged as a potential free-transfer signing for Guardiola, with the 33-year-old seen as a short-term solution who could fit straight into City’s team.

Sky Blues target up to 5 summer signings

The morning after Man City emerged victorious from their day in court with UEFA, overturning their 2-year European ban, many of the back pages in the English press focus on how the Sky Blues plan to rebuild in the summer.

Man City have already been confirmed as this season’s Premier League runners-up. Of course, Liverpool have won the league.

While the Times suggest that Man City are targeting 3 new summer signings, the Telegraph believe that they could bring as many as 5 new recruits.

Starting with the Times, readers are told:

Although the Covid-19 pandemic has harmed City’s finances, the club intend to buy three players with some of the money they have saved.

On specific targets, Napoli centre-half Kalidou Koulibaly is reportedly “top” on Man City’s shortlist. He could cost £70 million.

Alternative centre-half targets include Ruben Dias (Benfica) and Pau Torres (Villarreal).

Aside from centre-halves, City are also looking to sign a winger after Leroy Sane’s move to Bayern Munich. Valencia’s Ferran Torres is a possible target.

Which other players could sign for Man City?

The Telegraph widen the list of Man City’s possible summer additions.

When it comes to centre-halves, the Telegraph agree with the Times that Koulibaly is the top target, however they also including the following players on City’s shopping list:

Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake, Leicester’s Caglar Soyuncu, Milan Skriniar of Inter Milan and Dan-Axel Zagadou at Borussia Dortmund.

Sticking with defenders, the Telegraph also believe that Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, who is a target for Chelsea, is under consideration for the Sky Blues.

Moving further up the pitch, City are also linked to two midfielders: Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and Saul Nigeuz from Atletico Madrid.

Finally, the Telegraph believe that “City are on the look out for a striker”, although it’s unclear which attackers are being considered.

Will Pep Guardiola extend his contract with Man City?

Pep Guardiola’s current contract with City is set to expire in 2021.

However, the Times confirm that City want Guardiola to sign a contract extension:

(Man City) also intend to speak to Pep Guardiola about the possibility of the manager extending his contract, which expires next summer, in the wake of the club’s legal victory.

The Sky Blues hope to convince Guardiola to sign a 1-year extension until 2022.

Spanish football expert, Guillem Balague, has also reported on City’s efforts to extend Guardiola’s contract.
