Tottenham vs Newcastle prediction: Spurs to win 2-1
Both sides come into this match off the back of really encouraging results in the mad gameweek that was the midweek Premier League.
Tottenham returned to winning ways against Watford after two cup exits in four days.
Newcastle meanwhile, damaged Manchester City’s title hopes with a fine 2-1 win at St James’ Park.
The Toon also have a record signing in their ranks. Miguel Almiron is not eligible for this one though.
Spurs became the first Premier League club ever to go through two transfer windows without buying a single player.
Tottenham vs Newcastle: Who will win?
The bookies have Spurs at big favourites to take all three points in Saturday’s early kick-off. A win would take Tottenham into second place before Manchester City play on Sunday.
Newcastle may well worth be backing since their odds are so attractive but it will take another impressive rearguard action.
Spurs won 2-1 at Newcastle on the opening day of the season. They also beat the Toon 1-0 in the penultimate game of the 2017/2018 campaign.
Heung Min Son seems the most likely first goal scorer in this game. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino did hint at cramp/tiredness after the Watford game.
But, even off the bench the South Korean could be the first goal scorer in what should be a tight lunchtime encounter.
Tottenham vs Newcastle match preview
Both teams have plenty to play for on Saturday as Spurs look to put distance between themselves and the chasing teams for the top four.
Newcastle are not quite out of relegation trouble, despite that fine win over Manchester City in midweek.
Spurs have won three of their last four matches in the Premier League and their only defeat in that time was Manchester United’s 1-0 victory at Wembley.
Newcastle will prevent a similar challenge to the one Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side put together.
The Toon will defend deep and look to capitalise on mistakes. Watford could well have got more out of their trip to Wembley had they taken their chances at 1-0.
Without Harry Kane and Dele Alli Spurs are relying on Heung Min Son and the much maligned Fernando Llorente.
For once Spurs have a midweek break after this game, but their schedule does not ease up much long term with the Borussia Dortmund Champions League first leg now less than two weeks away.
Has Rafa Benitez made his peace with Mike Ashley?
Two wins on the bounce have pushed Newcastle to what looks like a position of safety.
Were they to get even a point from this game, the Toon would start to look like a side on the up.
Breaking Michael Owen’s long standing transfer record may even help to improve the mood amongst the Newcastle supporters.
Rafa Benitez continues to be linked with an exit but as was shown against City, with a Benitez game plan there is always hope.
The short turnaround between midweek games should give Newcastle some advantages. Not least the fact they bagged an extra day’s rest than Spurs.
Plus the tactics Newcastle will employ are likely to be very similar to the ones that were so fruitful versus Manchester City.
Tottenham team news vs Newcastle
Besides a worry about Heung Min Son, not much has changed at Spurs.
Key attacking players Harry Kane and Dele Alli are both ruled out. Kane is undergoing treatment in north America.
The England captain posted a promising video on social media on Thursday suggesting an earlier return than expected.
Perhaps for Borussia Dortmund at home?
Kieran Trippier should start after both Kyle Walker Peters and Serge Aurier showed their weaknesses in the last two matches.
Fernando Llorente will be hoping to score again after such a crucial goal versus Watford.
The likes of Victor Wanyama, Eric Dier and Lucas Moura are likely to start on the bench.
Newcastle team news vs Tottenham
New record signing Miguel Almiro is unavailable for this one but should play against Wolves on Monday week.
Karl Darlow, Paul Dummett, Mohamed Diame, Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-yeung are all unlikely to make this match.
After the Manchester City win, Pep Guardiola praised Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden for their displays in the heart of midfield.
Will these unheralded Premier League players get close to Christian Eriksen?
