Tottenham tie down midfielder with new long-term contract

Tottenham Hotspur have this afternoon announced that midfielder Harry Winks has put pen to paper on a new contract with the club.

Highly-regarded

Winks, a 22-year-old central midfielder, came up through the youth academy of Spurs, before breaking into the club’s first-team setup in 2014.

However, the gifted youngster only began to make any sort of real impact in North London last season, when he managed 21 Premier League appearances (though 18 of these came off the bench).

Despite his lack of starting minutes, Winks’ talents were evident to any and all who watched him play on a regular basis, with the current campaign having seen the English international carve out a more regular starting berth for himself during the early months of the campaign.

But, a persistent ankle injury picked up by the marauding midfielder in January has since seen Winks manage just 3 appearances over the last 4 months, a disappointing development after the youngster had just begun to showcase why he is held in such high regard in North London.

Staying put

Nevertheless, Winks’ recent injury problems have clearly not diminished the faith shown in the gifted youngster on the part of Tottenham, with the club having this afternoon confirmed that they have tied the London native down to a new contract until 2023:
