Tottenham target Marseille’s Hiroki Sakai as Kieran Trippier successor – Sky

Tottenham & Marseille’s Hiroki Sakai

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham have turned their attention to trying to sign Hiroki Sakai from Marseille.

Sakai is a 29-year-old Japanese international, who plays at either right-back or left-back.

Sakai is under contract at Marseille until 2021.

Last season, he played 27 times for OM in Ligue 1, scoring once and chipping in with four assists.

Sky have reported that “Marseille’s Hiroki Sakai is the type of player Tottenham want to bring in to replace Trippier”.

So how likely is the deal?

There are reasons to have doubts that Sakai will end up at Spurs.

Firstly, his age. Mauricio Pochettino has forged his career by developing young talent, and Tottenham appear to have a transfer policy focused on younger players.

Secondly, Tottenham already have two options to succeed Trippier.

Serge Aurier, although linked with a move away, remains at Spurs. Kyle Walker-Peters, meanwhile, now has his chance to become a mainstay in the XI.

Kieran Trippier & Atletico Madrid

Unless something dramatic happens, Kieran Trippier will join Atletico Madrid imminently.

Spurs are set to net £21.7 million from the transfer.

Trippier joined Spurs from Burnley back in 2015 for a reported £3.5 million.

As confirmed by reporter Alan Nixon, Burnley failed to secure a sell-on fee, so the Clarets won’t earn from the Atletico deal.
