As per a report from the reliable Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard, Spurs are hopeful of parting with contract rebel Christian Eriksen next month.
Danish international Eriksen has been on the books of Spurs for over 6 years now, having made the move to the English capital from Dutch giants Ajax in 2013.
And the 27-year-old has since gone on to establish himself not only as one of Tottenham’s key figures, but also as one of the most highly-regarded midfielders in England.
The last 4 Premier League campaigns combined, including last season, saw Eriksen directly contribute to a hugely-impressive 83 goals.
Eriksen’s contract talks
However, despite his crucial role in Spurs’ midfield ranks, and the club’s best efforts, to this point, Eriksen has refused to put pen-to-paper on a new deal in north London.
The 94-time capped international’s current contract is set to expire next summer.
‘Try something new’
As such, Eriksen’s contract standoff inevitably saw rumours mount that the Dane was set for a departure from the English capital this past summer.
Eriksen himself did little to play down the speculation surrounding his future back in June, when the midfielder admitted that he was keen on seeking out a new challenge.
Speaking in an interview with Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, Eriksen explained:
‘I feel that I am at a stage of my career where I would like to try something new. I have the deepest respect for everything that is happening at Tottenham and it would not be something negative to stay. But I have also said that I would like to try something new.’
‘I hope that something will be decided this summer. That is the plan. In football you never know when there could be a decision like that. It could be at any point. The best thing is always for it to happen quickly but in football things take time.’
Spurs ready to sell
In the end, however, none of the multiple outfits touted as potential destinations for the Spurs man opted to make a concrete move for his signature.
As such, Eriksen was forced to stay put.
The early months of the new season, though, have seen the 27-year-old often singled out for heavy criticism.
Many feel as though Eriksen is no longer giving his all for the Tottenham jersey, in anticipation of an imminent departure next year.
And, as per the aforementioned update from Dan Kilpatrick, the Spurs hierarchy, as a result, appear ready to throw in the towel in their attempts to tie Eriksen down to a fresh deal.
The midfield orchestrator is said to be for sale next month, as his current employers seek out a cut-price fee, to ensure they don’t watch Eriksen walk away from the club for nothing next summer.
As such, any interested parties could strike a deal for less than £40 million this winter.
This comes ‘even if it harms Jose Mourinho’s efforts to secure a top-four place and win the FA Cup or Champions League.’
