Tottenham & Heung-Min Son
It’s been another good season for Heung-Min Son at Tottenham.
Son has established himself as a starter for Mauricio Pochettino’s men this season.
The 25-year-old South Korean star has scored 12 goals and chipped in with 5 assists in 33 Premier League matches.
In all competitions, Son has scored 18 goals and notched 10 assists in 49 games.
Yet, it’s beginning to look likely that Son will miss the start of the 2018-19 season for Tottenham.
Asian Games & August
It’s been a long standing issue that Heung-Min Son has issues with conscription to the South Korean military.
Military service in South Korea is mandatary, while exemptions are only given in rare circumstances.
The service usually lasts 21 months, while citizens need to start their service before 27-years-old.
Yet Son may be able to get out of going to the army if he’s able to play for his country in the upcoming Asian Games.
The Asian Games runs from August 11 to September 1. This year it’s set to be played in Indonesia.
It’s an under-23 tournament, however all participating nations can include three over-aged players. Son could fill one of those slots for Korea.
South Korea’s U23 coach Kim Hak-bum has spoken about Tottenham’s Son playing in the Asian Games:
Son has a strong will to compete at the Asian Games.
But first, there’s the World Cup. I told Son to play well in Russia, before we meet at the Asian Games.
It’s a sensitive issue. I believe the Korea Football Association will handle this matter well. The men’s senior national team, the U23 team, the KFA and the player’s club should all work closely.
