Tottenham ‘fear’ Toby Alderweireld could leave for free – Mirror

Alderweireld could be set for Bosman transfer

Tottenham are reportedly worried that defender Toby Alderweireld could leave the club for free next summer, after a lack of offers.

The Belgian featured 50 times last season in Spurs’ most successful campaign in a long time.

The Lilywhites were competitive in the Premier League, while making it all the way to the Champions League final.

While they fell short, Spurs won a lot of admirers.

However, their impressive season may not stop Toby Alderweireld from leaving.

The central defender has been heavily linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer.

A move to Roma has been touted, but has not yet come to fruition.

Now, Spurs officials are apparently worried over his future.

The bargain deal of 2020?

According to the Daily Mirror, the club now feel that Alderweireld could leave for free next summer.

They claim that ‘The club have been willing to listen to offers for the 30-year-old Belgian whose £25million release clause expired two weeks before the transfer deadline but no serious bid has been forthcoming.’

Their report continues by explaining that Alderweireld is also willing to run down his Spurs contract, and would be able to negotiate his exit from the January window.

Spurs could still attempt to sell the Belgian before the current window closes or in January, though, with the Mirror’s report claiming that the club ‘will be keen to get a fee for him instead of allowing him to leave on a free transfer.’
