Tottenham fans slammed over reaction to Harry Kane strike vs Newcastle

Tottenham fans slammed over reaction to Harry Kane strike vs Newcastle

Viewers of the clash between Newcastle United and Tottenham have taken to social media in their numbers this evening, to take aim at the latter’s fanbase.

Lilywhites turn it around

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are of course currently locked in action.

In their first outing on the back of the international break, Spurs made the trip to St. James’ Park, for a Premier League showdown with newly-minted Newcastle.

Proceedings could not have gotten off to a much worse start for the visitors, as a raucous Magpies crowd urged their side into an opener inside two minutes, courtesy of the returning Callum Wilson:

Newcastle’s advantage, however, did not last long.

First, the lively Tanguy Ndombele levelled things up with a pinpoint finish from the edge of the area:

Then, just five minutes later, the clash was turned firmly on its head, as Harry Kane latched onto a defence-slitting pass from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to loft a clever finish beyond the advancing Karl Darlow.

‘One of our own’

Kane’s go-ahead strike inevitably gave rise to cheers and chanting on the part of the visiting support inside St. James’, who quickly drowned out the noise of a newly-revitalised Newcastle fanbase.

As outlined above, though, one particular rendition belted out by the Lilywhites’ crowd amid their celebrations has since given rise to a wave of backlash online.

The chant in question saw goalscorer Kane hailed as ‘one of our own’, on the back of a first Premier League goal of the season.

This, of course, comes just months after Spurs’ star striker made crystal clear his desire to depart the club, a fact which rival fanbases have not been at all shy in highlighting on Sunday evening:

*Update* – The action at St. James’ Park has since been brought to a temporary halt, owing to a medical emergency in the crowd.

We at 101 Great Goals wish the best for the individual/s involved.
