Tottenham can edge out Man City & Liverpool – Alan Shearer

The Premier League title race heats up

After 26 weeks of Premier League action, the 2018/19 title race is very much heating up.

As things stand, Manchester City are top of the Premier League after their 6-0 hammering of Chelsea on Sunday.

Liverpool sit in 2nd place, only behind City on goal difference but the Reds do have a game in hand on Pep Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool would beat Bournemouth 3-0 at Anfield this game week.

3rd place Tottenham would also pick up a win this weekend as they beat Leicester City 3-1.

Despite the win, Tottenham are still five points off the top of the table, although they do still have a small chance of winning the league this season.

Shearer on Tottenham’s title hopes

One man who agrees Spurs are still in with a shout is Alan Shearer.

Shearer recently wrote an article for the BBC, in which he states it is disrespectful to rule Spurs out of the title race:

It is a little disrespectful that not many people are talking about Tottenham as potential Premier League winners, because they are in the title race – and they have shown they are not going away.

It is actually very impressive that they keep getting results when none of those performances have been particularly great.

City and Liverpool might be playing the better football but Spurs have got a great attitude, which is more evidence of how good their manager is.

Shearer admits he did not think Tottenham could title challenge after they lost to Wolves back in December. But their recent form has put them back in contention:

When Tottenham lost to Wolves at Wembley at the end of December, in what was their fifth league defeat of the season, I saw that as the end of their title hopes.

I thought, you cannot lose that many games and still end up as champions. But their form since then has put them back in the hunt.

Tottenham’s tough fixture list

While Tottenham can’t be ruled out of the title race yet, they do have a relatively hard run of games coming up.

Spurs must first face Dortmund on Wednesday in a Champions League tie.

They then face a tough away trip to Burnley, who have not lost any of their last five league games.

Spurs then face Chelsea and Arsenal before travelling to Dortmund for the second leg of their Champions League clash.
