Tottenham blow as Harry Kane set to sit out season opener vs Man City

Tottenham talisman Harry Kane will play no part in the club’s opening Premier League fixture of the season, according to reports.

City keen

The name of star striker Kane has of course taken centre stage on the Lilywhite half of North London this summer.

This comes after the 27-year-old, back in May, informed those in a position of power at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium of his desire to move on, in search of silverware.

The revelation, originally brought to the fore by Sky Sports News, was subsequently picked up on by a host of sources across the English media, amid the widespread understanding that Kane was indeed eyeing a new adventure.

The weeks since, meanwhile, have inevitably seen a whole host of European giants tipped to swoop for the English international.

None, though, have been more persistently named as a potential landing spot than Premier League champions Manchester City. In fact, just last month, word was forthcoming that the Sky Blues had seen a big-money bid for Spurs’ star man rejected by Daniel Levy and co.

Kane to sit out

Chatter surrounding Kane’s future, however, inevitably began to slip somewhat under the radar of late, amid England’s efforts – which ultimately fell just short – at the European Championships.

But, with Gareth Southgate’s squad having since jetted off on respective vacations around the globe, it was always likely that Tottenham’s star man would soon return to the forefront of the media.

And, on Saturday, this is precisely what has come to pass.

The news, meanwhile, will no doubt prove of an altogether concerning nature for all associated with Spurs.

As revealed by the reliable Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, Kane is set to play no part in his club’s opening fixture of the new Premier League season, amid efforts to return to full fitness on the back of his exerts at Euro 2020.

Sounds largely harmless on the surface, right?

Kane’s impending absence, however, is made to look an altogether more noteworthy one when taking into account the identity of Tottenham’s first opponents of the 2021/22 campaign – the hitman’s frontrunner suitors, Manchester City.
