Who are Newcastle’s best FPL assets?
Newcastle, under Steve Bruce, are never going to be the most exciting side to watch.
But they are also probably not going to be relegated next time out, and will likely end up somewhere between 11th and 16th in the Premier League table.
They would secure a respectable 12th placed finish in 2020/21, even after dealing with some pretty major injury issues along the way.
So, whilst you are probably not going to want to select too many Newcastle players for your FPL side, there remain a couple of Magpies whom you may wish to keep an eye on.
Callum Wilson, forward (7.5m)
The most obvious option, and by far and away Newcastle’s best FPL pick this year, is Callum Wilson.
The 29-year-old is a proven Premier League goalscorer, both with Newcastle and, previously, Bournemouth.
This past season, for example, saw Wilson provide 12 goals and five assists in just 26 Premier League appearances.
Wilson was incredibly important to the Magpies’ attacking threat. In the 12 games he missed through injury, Newcastle managed just two wins – both of which came in May versus sides who had already been relegated.
So, if the Geordie outfit can keep Wilson injury-free across the majority of the upcoming season, he should be a very solid option at 7.5m.
Ryan Fraser, midfielder (5.5m)
Ryan Fraser had something of a nightmare debut campaign with Newcastle, after being seriously hampered by fitness issues.
Fraser managed 18 Premier League appearances in 2020/21, but only 11 of those came as a starter, and only three saw him see out 90 minutes. Nevertheless, the Scot would still notch three assists.
As such, if he can regain full fitness this summer, as proven in the past, Fraser can be a useful FPL asset, especially when playing with former Bournemouth teammate, Callum Wilson.
Federico Fernandez, defender (4.5m)
Federico Fernandez may be a decent option to rotate with another 4.5m-priced defender.
The Argentine would help Newcastle to five clean sheets in 24 appearances last term.
And when Fernandez was out injured, the Magpies did look notably worse at the back. So, if the former Napoli man stays fit this time around, he could prove an option to keep an eye on, particularly amid stretches of favourable Newcastle fixtures.
