Top 3 Chelsea players to sign on FPL 2021/22

Top 3 Chelsea players to sign on FPL 2021/22

Who are Chelsea’s best FPL assets?

2020/21 was most certainly a season of two halves for Chelsea.

Under Frank Lampard, the Blues looked fairly poor, with a top-four finish having looked highly unlikely before his eventual sacking.

However, after Thomas Tuchel took over, Chelsea were transformed into one of the best sides in the English top-flight.

The Londoners were particularly impressive at the back, ending the campaign with the second-best defensive record, behind only Manchester City.

Chelsea’s record against top teams also improved a great deal, with Tuchel having managed to grind out wins against the likes of City (three times), Liverpool, Leicester, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in less than half a season.

So, given how impressive they looked over the second half of the campaign, Chelsea appear primed for a solid 2021/22 season, which, of course, should also mean some great Fantasy Premier League picks.

But who are the Blues’ best FPL assets right now?

Kai Havertz, midfielder (8.5m)

The first player you may wish to sign is Kai Havertz.

The German had a mixed debut campaign at Stamford Bridge, but improved a great deal under Thomas Tuchel.

The former PSG coach used Havertz in a false-nine role on a regular basis, and it worked quite well.

Havertz did end the season with just four goals and six assists in the Premier League, which is not a great return.

But a full campaign as a false-nine should give rise to a hugely desirable out of position FPL option.

This will prove especially the case if the German starts to match his xG and xA. From February 1st, essentially when Tuchel took charge of Chelsea, Havertz boasted the highest non-penalty xG and xA per 90 minutes of any Premier League player who managed at least 500 minutes between February and May (0.87). To highlight how impressive this is, in the same period, Harry Kane’s NPxG and xA per 90 minutes was 0.80.

So, if Chelsea do not sign a new striker this summer, Havertz could well become one of the best midfield options on FPL, as he will surely continue to be used up top by Tuchel.

Ben Chilwell, defender (6.0m)

As already mentioned, Thomas Tuchel improved Chelsea’s defence a great deal after arriving earlier this year.

The Londoners finished the 2020/21 campaign with the second-best defence in the Premier League. During Tuchel’s tenure thus far, Chelsea have only conceded 13 league goals, the lowest of all 20 PL teams over the same period.

So, there is a very good chance that Chelsea will have some quality defensive assets in FPL in 2021/22.

Perhaps the best will be Ben Chilwell. The Englishman actually lost his starting spot when Tuchel first took over, with the German having utilised Marcos Alonso in his more natural left-wing-back berth.

However, as the season wore on, it became clear that Tuchel had decided on Chilwell as his no.1 LWB, with the former Leicester man starting every Champions League game from the quarter-finals on.

Chilwell also has the potential to provide some decent attacking returns, having notched three goals and five assists in 27 league games last time out.

Mason Mount, midfielder (7.5m)

Mason Mount is perhaps not the most exciting FPL option, but he will earn you a decent return across a 38-game season.

Mount is pretty much nailed on to feature for Chelsea in most games, with the midfielder quickly becoming a favourite of any manager he works under.

And whilst he may not be the most exciting player to watch, Mount will earn you a decent number of goals, assists and bonus points.

The 22-year-old finished last season with 147 points on FPL, more than the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez and Raphinha.
