Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld & Arsenal
The Sun on Sunday have a couple of questionable transfer rumours.
Perhaps the most dubious claim is that Toby Alderweireld could possibly leave Arsenal for Tottenham.
Will Alderweireld really ‘do a Sol Campbell’ and switch Spurs for the Gunners?
The basis of the Sun’s report are well-known details about Alderweireld’s current Tottenham contract.
Alderweireld has been on the books of Spurs since making the move to London from Atletico Madrid in 2015.
The problem for Tottenham is that Alderweireld’s current deal at Spurs expires in 2019.
Tottenham have the option to extend Alderweireld’s deal by a further 12 months but triggering it would activate a release clause in Alderweireld’s contract allowing him to leave for £25 million in the summer transfer window immediately after the clause was activated.
Cue the following claim in the Sun:
Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld is being eyed by a host of Premier League clubs — including bitter rivals Arsenal.
At Arsenal, he has been mentioned as they look to bolster Unai Emery’s squad on a budget.
Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge & Leicester
In a slightly more believable transfer rumour, Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge is linked with a summer switch to Leicester.
Of course Brendan Rodgers is now in charge at the King Power Stadium.
Rodgers, who has previously worked as a coach at Chelsea and as Liverpool’s manager, knows Sturridge well. The Sun claim:
Sturridge, 29, is out of contract at Anfield at the end of the season and is set to leave the club after seven seasons.
Rodgers still rates the England striker highly and will look at him as an option to bolster his attack, which is led by Jamie Vardy but only has Kelechi Iheanacho and Shinji Okazaki in support.
