Toby Alderweireld joins Qatar side Al Duhail SC as three replacements targetted

Alderweireld’s Spurs stint is over

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the departure of Belgian centre-back Toby Alderweireld, with the 32-year-old joining Qatar side Al Duhail SC on a permanent transfer.

We have reached an agreement with Al-Duhail SC in Qatar for the transfer of Toby Alderweireld.

We wish Toby the very best for the future.

Alderweireld made 236 appearances for the lilywhites, and formed a formidable partnership with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen before the latter’s departure last summer. Now with his prime years firmly behind him, however, Alderweireld reportedly requested to leave the club earlier this summer, and has since got his wish.

At a reported 13 million pounds, the sale of Alderweireld represents fantastic business from spurs, who bought the defender for just 15 million pounds in 2015 from Atletico Madrid.

Another defender incoming

Alderweireld’s departure creates space for Tottenham’s centre back chase, with the north London outfit thought to be closing in on a deal for Argentine centre-back Cristian Romero. The 23-year-old, currently at Atalanta, is valued at around 55 million euros by the Italian club, with negotiations progressing.

Alternatively, Fabrizio Romano outlines that the club would chase three other players, with the three transfer fees adding up to 55 million euros. These three, in the form of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Nikola Milenkovic, and Kurt Zouma, would be seemingly competing for one spot in Tottenham’s defence.

As such, signing all three appears unlikely, although it cannot be ruled out. For now, however, Romero is clearly the priority.
