In recent weeks, it has become clear that contract negotiations between Tottenham and Toby Alderweireld has not been plain sailing.
His agent revealed just recently that discussions were not going to plan.
He offered Spurs the ultimatum of either offer his client a suitable contract or let him find a new club.
“Toby is impressive and for his performances, he deserves either a correct contract from Tottenham or a transfer.”
This came as a worry for the Spurs, with Danny Rose also speaking out over the club’s wage structure.
This caused a number of clubs to go on high alert as the future of the Premier League’s best central-defender became publically uncertain.
Chelsea and Manchester City were the two clubs most interested in signing the Belgian international.
Much to the relief of Spurs fans, Toby Alderweireld has offered some reassurance regarding the situation.
He has made it clear that he is fully committed to the club.
He stated that he has no desire to leave and hopes to win titles at Tottenham.
“I am trying to focus on the pitch, trying to help the team, give my quality on the field – that’s important and the rest will come.
I have my father and my agent who are sorting out that kind of thing.
Me, I am here to play football, to win things with Spurs and to give my best for the team.
I did that from day one and I will do it now as well.”
Best in the league
When interest from Manchester City and Chelsea became clear, it came as no surprise.
Since joining Spurs in 2015, the Belgian has consistently been the best defender in the league.
Alderweireld helped Spurs to concede the fewest goals over the last two seasons.
Which is a mightly impressive feat considering the season before, Spurs conceded more goals than Hull City who were relegated.
