Tottenham central-defender has admitted that cant imagine playing without Jan Vertonghen.
The pair also play together for the Belgian national team.
Alderweireld and Vertonghen have been together since their days at Germinal Beerschot academy.
Since the arrival of Toby Alderweireld, Tottenham have over the last two seasons conceded the fewest Premier League goals.
This stat is made even more impressive given the fact that the season before Alderweireld’s arrival, Spurs conceded as many goals as the relegated Hull City.
Tottenham have become renowned for their incredible defence, with Spurs’ two Belgians being the driving force behind that.
The pair grew up together in the academy of a small Belgian club named Germinal Beerschot.
At different times, they both transferred to Holland’s top club Ajax where they won two Eredivisie titles together.
This dynamic Belgian duo now play in the Premier League and are renowned for being one of the best central-defensive partnerships in Europe.
“We have grown into one another”
Speaking about his partnership with Jan Vertonghen, Alderweireld told Het Belang Van Limburg:
“Over the years we have grown into one another and really become close.
I can hardly play without him. If I ever go to another club, he will have to go with me.”
Jan Vertonghen is set to break the record for the most ever capped Belgian player.
He is currently one cap behind Jan Ceulemans, who earned 96 caps for the Belgian Red Devils.
Vertonghen could break the record on Tuesday if he features in Belgium’s next two fixtures.
Tomorrow, Belgium travel to Bosnia and then on Tuesday, they host Cyprus to conclude their World Cup qualifying campaign.
Speaking about Vertonghen’s achievement, Alderweireld said:
“I think it’s great for Jan that he can break that record, and he will stay an international for a while yet.”
